Last year as inexplicably as it began, my twenty-year’s writer’s
block came to an end...
I hadn’t written
anything, nor tried to get anything published, since completing my master
degree in creative writing almost two decades earlier. Suddenly I was composing short stories (even
the occasional poem)as if doing so were the most natural thing in the world. Here’s the big difference: I decided to forget everything I’d been taught
in school and rely on my gut. That seems to have been the right way to go. I believe
that some of the stuff I have been turning out this last year is pretty good. In fact, as good as or
better than anything I’d attempted all those years ago.
Last Thursday, December 15, not quite a week after my 50th
birthday, I received an email from the editors at
Every Day Fiction saying that they
were going to publish my story “Knock-Knock.” I’ve reread that email every day since
then just to make sure there was no mistake.
I'll be keeping you apprised.
